I don’t know if any of you has ever been curious about the school system of other countries, but I’ve always been wondering “how does it work there?” so, assuming that there are other people like me, I thought that making a post about the school system of my home country would be cool, so here it is !
How does the school system work in Italy?
Basics
every level of education (from pre-school to university) is divided into years, which gather students of the same age
students belonging to the same year are divided into classes composed of 15/30 students and they usually last from the first to the last year of school
classes have nothing to do with subjects
students don’t move from one room to another to follow lessons, the teachers move
all subjects are compulsory, we don’t chose which subjects we want to take (with the excpetion of 2nd languages)
the school year starts in mid September and ends at the beginning of June, we have a winter break of two/three weeks around Christmas time
the school week is 5 or 6 days long, it’s usually 5 days long from pre-school to primary school, and 6 days long in middle school and high school (even though most schools offer a 5 days long week option)
we don’t wear uniforms (unless it’s a private school), but we have to wear this in primary school
the school day usually lasts 5/6 hours if you have a 6 days long week (if you have a five days long week you usually have two or three days that last 8 hours), there are no free hours during a “normal” school day
we don’t really have a sports’ culture in Italy, so there aren’t any school teams, in some high schools there are sports tournaments which are organized by students and are held among teams made of students beloning to the same class
lockers aren’t a thing (or they are a really rare thing)
we have both written and oral tests which are spread during the whole lenght of the school year
marks go from 0 to 10, you have to get more than 6 to pass
in high school it’s possible to fail one or more subjects, to pass the year you have to take an exam of that subject/subjects in September
Levels of Education
1) Pre-School
called Asilo nido or Nido d’infanzia, literally “nest pre-school” or “infancy nest”
non-compulsory
lasts for a maximum of c.a. 3 years
gathers children aged from 3 months to 3 years old
2) Kindergarten
called Scuola dell’infanzia or Scuola materna, literally “infancy school” or “maternal school”
non-compulsory
usually lasts 3 years
divided in three “grades”: piccoli, medi, grandi [small (kids), middle (kids), big (kids)]
gathers children aged from 2.5 to 6 years old
3) Primary school
called Scuola primaria or Scuola elementare, literally “primary school” or “elementary school”
compulsory
lasts 5 years (or more if you fail a year, which is very uncommon in primary school)
gathers students aged from 5/6 to 10/11 years old
the subjects studied are the same for every school (even though the ones of private schools can be slightly different) and they are: Italian, maths, English, mathematics, natural sciences, history, geography, pe, arts, music, and religious studies (non-compulsory)
4) Secondary school
called Scuola superiore di primo grado o Scuola media, literally “lower secondary school” or “middle school”
compulsory
lasts 3 years (or more if you fail a year/multiple years)
gathers students aged from 10/11 to 13/14 years old
the subjects studies are the same for every school (again, there may be some changed in private schools, like the addition of Latin) and they are: Italian, maths, English, second foreign language (either Spanish, French or German), science, technology, arts, history & geography, music, pe, and religious studies (non-compulsory)
at the end of the third year there’s a leaving exam, the subjects tested are: Italian (writing an essay), maths (4 exercises), English (text comprehension), second language (text comprehension), INVALSI (national tests of Italian and maths); you receive a mark between 0 and 10 e lode (10 cum laude), you pass the exam if you get more than 6
by passing the exam a student gets the Licenza Media (middle school license) so that they can attend high school
5) High school
called Scuola superiore (di secondo grado), literally “(upper) secondary school”
lasts 3 or 5 years (or more if you fail a year/multiple years), only a 5 years hs gives you a degree which allows you to go to university, a 3 years hs gives you a license
gathers students aged from 13/14 to 18/19 years (usually), even though students can decide to leave high school at 16 without getting a degree or by getting a license
after middle school students get to chose the kind of high school they want to get in, the kinds of school are accessible to every student as they don’t need a certain mark to get in
all high schools have some common subjects which are: Italian, English, maths, history, science, pe, and religious studies (non-compulsory); every kind of school has its specific additional subjects
high schools are divided in: licei (lyceums), istituti tecnici (technical institutes), and istituti professionali (professional institutes/vocational schools)
some kinds of schools offer different paths, students have to chose the “turn” they want to give to their studies at the beginning of the third year of high school
the kinds of lyceums are: 1. Artistic, with different turns (each turn has its specific additional subjects): figurative arts, architecture, design, multimedia, graphic, scenography 2. Classic, additional subjects are: Latin and Ancient Greek Linguistic, additional subjects are: two foreign languages (in addition to English) 3. Musical & Coreutical, with different turns (each turn has its specific additional subjects): musical, coreutical 4. Scientific, with different turns (each turn has its specific additional subjects): traditional, applied sciences, sports 5. Human Sciences, with different turns (each turn has its specific additional subjects): traditional, social & economic
technical institutes are divided into economic ones and technological ones: 1. economic ones are: A. for Administration, Finance and Marketing [with turns: traditional, international relations, corporate information systems] B. for Turism 2. technological ones are: A. Mechanics [with turns: mechanics and mechatronics, energy] B. Transport and Logistics [with turns: construction (of the mean of transport), conduction (of the mean of transport), logistics] C. Electronics [with turns: electronics, electrical engeneering, automation] D. Informatics [with turns: informatics, telecomunications] E. Graphics and Comunication F. Chemistry [with turns: chemistry, enviromental biotechnologies, sanitary biotechnologies] G. Textile [with turns: traditional, footwear & fashion] H. Agricoltural [with turns: Productions & transformations, Management of the environment, Viticulture and oenology] I. Constructions [with turns: traditional, geotechnical]
professional institutes are there to “teach you a job”, this is the only kind of schools that allows you to get a license after your third year and leave high school, they are divided into those for services and those for industries and handicrafts: 1. services ones are: A. Social and Health care [with turns: traditional, dental technician, optician] B. Commercial, Food and Hospitality [with turns: cookery, serving and selling, hospitality] 2. industries ones are: 1. Productions [with turns: industry, handicrafts] 2. Maintenance and Technical assistance
To graduate high school you have to pass the Esame di maturità (literally “maturity’s exam”), the exam is composed of four different parts: first part [an essay, in Italian], second part [a test on the “characteristic” subject of the kind of school you attend], third part [a test on different subjects 3/4/5/6 depending on the individual school], fourth part [an oral exam on different subjects, the number depends on the choice of the exam’s committee]
(THE NEW MINISTRY OF EDUCATION IS PLANNING ON CHANGING IT)
The exam is graded with a mark from 0 to 100 cum laude, to pass a student has to get more than 60
6) Higher Education
Higher education is mainly covered by universities, there are some superior grad schools and professional higher schools as well
University is built on the 3+2 system, meaning: a Laurea Triennale (Bachelor’s degree) lasting 3 years + a Laurea Magistrale (Master’s degree) lasting 2 years
After the Master’s degree you can access to Post-MA degrees, Doctorates or Specializing schools
There are some exceptions to the 2+3 system: Law (lasts 5 years), Medicine (lasts 6 years), Pharmacy (lasts 5 years), Dentistry (lasts 5 years), Primary teacher education (lasts 5 years), Architecture (lasts 5 years in some universities), Veterinary medicine (lasts 5 years)
Each university usually offers every kind of course, the only exception are Polytechnic Universities, which only offer Engeenering courses and Architecture
The admission requirements can vary from each course and each university: some have entrance tests, some are “free entrance” and don’t have a limit in the number of students that can enroll, some have a limit and the students who apply first are the one that can enroll
Some courses have national wide entrance tests, the courses are: Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Health Care (nursing, midwifery, physioterapy, etc)
The academic year starts in mid September/early October and ends in late May/early June
Classes usually aren’t cumpolsory and there are no classes on saturdays (unlike what it’s usually like in hs)
Exams are grouped in sessions, during sessions there are no classes, there are 3 main sessions during the year and some extra ones depending on the course/university, the main ones are: January/February, June/July, September
During each session you can take the exams related to the previous semesters, including the exams from the previous years
Marks go from 0 to 30 cum laude, to pass you have to get over 18
There’s no limit of times you can fail an exam, and there usually isn’t a number of exams you have to pass to move to the next year
If you don’t graduate in time you are “fuoricorso” (this is really common especially during the bachelor’s degree)
When you graduate, your finaly mark can go from 0 to 110 cum laude, and it depends on your GPA

HI!!!!!
I was born on the 31st of May, year 2000 in Quezon City. I am the only child of my parents, the “unico hijo” as everyone calls it.
Oh, and by the way, I am Kent Patrick Conti Lumbes – and this is my story.
I studied nursery to preparatory in Rosario Christian Learning Center in Rosario, Pasig. The only thing I can recall during that time was that I always lead my classmates to form a line when we were to move to another classroom and break time as well. I was a bibo kid” at that time, as what my friends call me when I shared to them my childhood experience.
We lived in Pasig City and took my middle school at Pasig Christian Academy, however, after the first 8 months of my 1st grade, we then transferred to Paranaque City in December of 2005, up to this day. At a young age, I travelled my way to school for 2 hours a day. At first, it was very hard since I was still adjusting, but then I got used it.
Up until 5th grade, I was accompanied by my mother or sometimes my uncle (whenever he was free, he would fetch me). I started commuting my way to school when I turned Grade 6. At this point in my life, I have met a lot of people. I have met a lot of new friends and made memories together. Also, I was a basketball and volleyball varsity player of our school wherein we competed with different schools at the Pasig City Association of Private School Administrators (PAPRISA) Palaro. It was fun competing with the other schools especially when I got to do the things I love most – and because we were exempted in our exams every time we had a game.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to win any place in our basketball team because my team mates weren’t allowed to play in the said competition because they had problems with their grades – which disqualified us in the game. Meanwhile, we won third place in volleyball. Everyone was happy even if we weren’t able to get the championship. It was one of the best memories I had during my elementary days.
After I graduated elementary, my mother wanted me to study in Paranaque so that it would not be hard for me to commute every day. At first, I did not like her idea because it would be a lot harder for me to adjust again to a new environment. I was already used to my previous school and I didn’t want to leave my friends and classmates behind. But then, my mom wanted me to take the entrance examination at Great Christian Academy (a school which was near our home), and luckily passed the test.
As everyone says, high school life is the most exciting part of your life – and indeed it was. I experienced a lot of different things. I met friends – who now feel like strangers to me. You’ll get to a point where you’ll feel very loved yet you’ll lose it. The best part I had during my high school days were experiencing going home late and being scolded by your mom, having low grades and being scolded by your mom again, sleeping at a friend’s house, getting scolded by a teacher, and many more. Despite those things, I learned many things. I made a lot of memories with my friends and will surely treasure it.
I’m currently a grade 12 student, taking up Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at Polytechnic University of the Philippines. I still don’t know why I’m here but one thing’s for sure – I will finish my study whatever happens. I am planning to take up Engineering in college, and I know that it is not easy but I will strive hard and do my best and make sure to get that “Engineer” in my name.
And that is a summary of how my life was for the past 17 years.

Thousands join ‘Takbo Para sa Kalikasan’ for Manila Bay rehab
#PHnews: Thousands join ‘Takbo Para sa Kalikasan’ for Manila Bay rehab
CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan -- Government officials as well as ordinary folks showed their cooperation and support for the rehabilitation of Manila Bay by participating in the "Takbo Para sa Kalikasan 2" run held on Sunday at the Bulacan Sports Complex in this city.
The event dubbed as "Philippines Run in Support of the Battle for Manila Bay" was led by Senator Cynthia Villar as keynote speaker; Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando; Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary Benny Antiporda; Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Assistant Secretary for Special Concerns Marjorie N. Jalosjos; Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Assistant Secretary Ramon L. Cualoping III, and National Youth Commission (NYC) chairperson Ryan Enriquez.
Jalolos said the run was organized by DILG, in cooperation with the DENR, the provincial government of Bulacan and other government agencies, in a bid to inculcate public awareness in the need for strengthened calls for action over the bay’s rehabilitation.
"We encourage everyone to be serious and support the cleanup of Manila Bay for the next generation, including Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, all coastal areas contributing sewage to Manila Bay, not just the National Capitol Region (NCR), but all of us. Let's start with our family, our community and our village," she said.
“We started the 'fight' in Manila Bay but this is not the end of our fight for nature. Let's start the campaign to protect the environment in our diverse community,” she added.
Jalosjos also said the "Takbo Para sa Kalikasan 2" had the most number of participants compared to the previous event.
Meanwhile, Villar, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, said DILG's aim for this run was to draw attention and support for the rehabilitation of coastal areas and preservation of water sources and natural resources.
Manila Bay is bordered by five coastal cities of the NCR and coastal provinces of Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, and Cavite.
“We are glad to have more and more protectors of Manila Bay, so to speak, who have been very vigilant. Leading the way is the DILG which is among the 13 agencies helping us keep Manila Bay clean. They are being directed by the Supreme Court through a writ of continuing mandamus to rehabilitate, restore and conserve Manila Bay. So, they are called 'mandamus agencies,'” she added.
Aside from DILG, the other mandamus agencies, Villar said, are the DENR, Department of Education, Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Budget and Management, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, Philippine Ports Authority, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, and Local Water Utilities Administration.
"We are not doing this for ourselves anymore but for the future generation, for our children and children's children, especially now that the situation of our natural resources is indeed serious. All over the world, there are lot of happenings caused by environmental destruction, degradation and neglect," Villar said.
Fernando, meanwhile, said the fun run was not only good for the health but also for the environment.
"This fun run is a great idea, great activities because not only will our health be benefited but it will also protect our environment especially the coastal areas by spreading awareness about it," Fernando said.
For his part, Antiporda, asked for proper regulation of single-use plastic products. “We, at the DENR, will take the path to awaken the sleeping spirit of the people,” he said.
Antiporda also explained that in preparation for the first-year anniversary of the "Battle for Manila Bay" on January 27, 2020, the agency's strategies are being intensified to make Manila Bay safer like the deployment of tug boats to explore the "waste islands" in the middle of Manila Bay.
Cualoping said the purpose of the event in addition to promoting awareness about the Manila Bay include the presentation of various projects and programs of government agencies for the bay.
All this, he said, is being done by the Duterte administration for the next generation of Filipinos.
In support to the campaign by the Bulacan provincial government, deepening of the rivers has been undertaken, starting in the City of Malolos and Calumpit town. In addition, there are scheduled dredging of major rivers connecting to Manila Bay such as the Bocaue River and the Marilao-Meycauayan-Obando River system by San Miguel Corporation, the contractor for the construction of the New Manila International Airport in Bulakan town.
The starting point of Sunday's 3K U-turn fun run commenced at 4 a.m. at the Bulacan Sports Complex in Barangay Bagong Bayan (Sta. Isabel) and ended at the Manila North Road in Barangay San Pablo.
The 5K U-turn run, on the other hand, ended in Barangay Tikay Elementary School while the 10K U-turn run ended in front of the Bulacan Polytechnic College.
The Philippine Red Cross -Bulacan Chapter and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office also collaborated in the marathon to ensure the safety of the runners. (PNA)

According to your education system, I should be in 12th grade right? It's not really like that in SG. We have two most basic levels of education that is compulsory and takes 10 years to complete, basically we start at 6, then we take a national exam when we are 12, then we go to secondary school, where the atmosphere is very different and everyone studies lol. When we are in secondary 2 (for u it's 8th grade), we pick certain subjects that we want to take, and between different arts and sciences
Such as literature and geography and history, music or higher arts, and also between biology, physics and chemistry. (My subject combination was literature, half history, full chemistry and full physics). Then after that we take the national exams when we are secondary 4, which is 10th grade for you, and then we all diverge into different paths. You can go to polytechnics, junior colleges or ITE. Most people go for poly, but I'm going for JC, because I'm not really sure what I want to do in uni
But in JC, there are 2 different streams, science stream and arts stream. They mirror the subjects you took in secondary school, and normally it's harder to get into science stream than arts stream, but my passion lies in English, literature and hopefully economics, which is an arts combination. Science stream is more of a combination of biology, physics, chemistry and maths. I have to take a compulsory science subject, so I'm taking math! Wow this is really long, but I hope it helps :) ~ʕ•ٹ•ʔ
Complete side note lmao idk how the unit works but apparently it's over and none of my fave got in, ahh nvm ~ʕ•ٹ•ʔ ((u can ignore this if u want))
WOW, okay okay, it’s so detailed. Thank you it helps me a lot, I really like know this kind of stuff tho~ After I read it, I realized that actually we have pretty similar education system. It’s just different in the time when we allowed to choose which stream we want to learn more. Because you tell me about your education system, I want to tell you mine too lol. So in here we have to finish at least 12 years study consist of: elementary school (6 years), middle school (3 years), and high school/vocational high school (3 years). Which we’ll chose the stream we want to learn more at first year of high school. In here, we named it “science stream”, “social stream”, and “literature stream” (even not all school in here has “literature stream”, but this stream does exist XD), which actually it’s completely the same as science and art stream in yours, just different in term (And you know what? I was in social stream when I was high school, so, we’re somewhat the same! Even for compulsory science subject I took biology since I’m sucks in math lol XD). After we finished the 12 years study, we could continue to the higher education, like University (whether the undergraduate degree or bachelor degree - both of these still have stream system for the entrance exams) and Polytechnic. Similar right? XD
And the unit, I don’t understand either. But isn’t it has the same system as produce 101? Well, I just guessing though lol. Ah... sorry to hear that, that’s bad if our favorite couldn’t make it to final, that’s why I hate and never watch survival game and such (Stray kids is exception tho, I accidentally watched it and like it, so yeah lol)
